Apples and Snakes is the leading organisation for performance poetry in England, with a reputation for producing exciting, innovative work that raises the profile of spoken word and pushes the boundaries of the artform for artists, audiences and participants.

We work in partnership with creative individuals and organisations across the country to produce high quality artistic experiences, offering professional development for artists including advice, training and performance opportunities at a local, national and international level. We have a particular focus on nurturing emerging talent and championing marginalised and disenfranchised voices.

Set up in 1982 by a group of poets, Apples and Snakes has been the development ground for many high profile artists, has inspired countless young people, and taken performance poetry to new places. Apples and Snakes is a national organisation and currently has Programme Coordinators in London, the North East, South East, South West and the West Midlands. Find out what’s happening where you live by visiting our events page.

Apples and Snakes is part of a national network of 10 Associate Bridge organisations in London funded by Arts Council England to ensure children and young people experience the richness of the arts both in and outside of school, and to drive participation in Arts Award and Artsmark across each region. Working with The Lyric Hammersmith, Roundhouse and Sadler’s Wells, Apples and Snakes supports the lead Bridge for London, A New Direction, by helping to inform and develop the Bridge strategic work for Libraries.
