Hello all!
August is traditionally when things slow down a little, as people get distracted by the heat of summer (ha!), various spoken events (ha, I say!) and festivals. I would not get too complacent if I were you, however. Go and See and Poets’ Place are still going, which means now is the time to go looking for inspiration, write new work and share it with like-minded people.
If you need your poetry fix, fear not! Although Hit the Ode is still on its summer break (returning on September 13 – save the date), we’re filling the empty Thursday date with the show which tastefully straddles the border between performance poetry and medical science. Yes, Richard Tyrone Jones’ Big Heart comes to Birmingham straight from the Edinburgh Fringe, and you’ll be able to see it in the familiar setting of the Victoria in the first Hit the Ode Summer Special.
There are also two wonderful events to look forward to on September 1: at 2pm, we’re launching Power Plant, a new series of free masterclasses in performance poetry. I’m thrilled to announce that the first session will be led by none other than Buddy Wakefield, a legendary figure on the American spoken word scene, coming to Birmingham for the first time. Later on the same day, Buddy will share his poetry with us, supported by three local poets. People travel from far and wide to witness Buddy’s performances… Don’t miss one on your doorstep! All the details are after the jump.
As always, I remain at your disposal should you have any questions, remarks, aphorisms or epiphanies to share.
Take care, and see you soon,
Bohdan
