Dan Simpson: 5 Dos and 5 Don’ts from the Fringe

The second in our access-all-areas Fringe blog series, following Dan Simpson as he performs his new show Nerdsmith. Dan gives his ultimate tips to making the most of the Fringe as a performer.

Nerdsmith

  • Don’t do a brand new, unplanned, semi-improvised show in the first weekend with someone you’ve never performed with before: there’s enough to do to get into your own show without the stress of that ridiculous thing.
  • Do a brand new, unplanned, semi-improvised show in the first weekend with someone you’ve never performed with before: the Fringe is an experimental kind of place, so just do that ridiculous thing as it’ll probably be great.

  • Don’t, at your most tired and lowest ebb, stay out late and drink too much: go home, rest, plan your next day with new energy.
  • Do, at your most tired and lowest ebb, stay out late and drink too much: you need to blow off steam with friends, and that break from the Fringe will give you new energy the next day.

  • Don’t sign up for a midnight cabaret gig as a poet: your style and material won’t fit the gig, and you and the audience will just feel sad.
  • Do sign up for a midnight cabaret gig as a poet: your style and material won’t fit the gig, so find a way to make it work to entertain the audience – and grow as a performer.

  • Don’t book an act you don’t know much about for your comedy-poetry panel show the morning of said comedy-poetry panel show: it’s unlikely they’ll be able to get their head around the concept in time.
  • Do book an act you don’t know much about for your comedy-poetry panel show the morning of said comedy-poetry panel show: there are incredible performers who say yes and do amazing things last minute, because it’s the Fringe.

  • Don’t spend three hours in a boardgame cafe playing a ridiculously complicated card game: you should be flyering for your show, which starts 10 minutes after you finish anyway.
  • Do spend end three hours in a boardgame cafe playing a ridiculously complicated card game: it’s not all about your show, but your happiness too.
