Picture The Poet: Preston

Spoken word artist Ali Gadema says thank you to the young people of Preston…Toyah

I have been working in Preston for the past two months, In my time being there, I have met some amazing young people, we have looked at creating self-portraits with words and explored Preston poetically. One of the young people I met is called Toyah Clifton, she had never performed before this project, but she had been writing lyrics for some time. Through Picture The Poet, Toyah ended up sharing a stage with Mike Garry and Benjamin Zephaniah and although she was extremely nervous the crowd absolutely loved her. I wanted to take this opportunity on the Blog to send a massive well done to Toyah for performing and to the young people at Preston foyer who came and listened to our poems or indeed, gave writing a go. It’s time to say goodbye to Preston for now but I hope some poetical seed has been sewn in Lawson street that we will see blossom into performance poets in full bloom.

My Old Gran.

By Toyah

I’d like to send a telegram to my old gran,

Who lives close by in a caravan,

My gran is old but she Is not bold,

When winter comes she gets a cold

The caravan is by the sea,

I like it when I go for tea,

Gran knows my favorite food is pie and chips,

She knows it makes me want to lick my lips.

I love to stay with my old gran,

After all I am her biggest fan
