My relationship with Apples and Snakes didn’t start auspiciously. It was 2003 and I decided to invite some of my ‘Utter!‘ writing group to Apples’ 21st birthday party. Unfortunately, that day a quite strange woman who had plans to tap-dance the length of the UK attended the group for the first (and last) time. On arrival, she embarrassed everybody by demanding slice upon slice of Apples’ 21st Anniversary cake ‘to take home to her daughter’. I was basically a gatecrasher who’d brought an eccentric person to the party and stolen all the cake.

Thankfully, things have improved since then as a new generation arose. I’ve hosted and appeared at Jawdance and other great gigs for Apples around the UK, with Tim Wells and Iain Sinclair among others, and sold out the Albany (okay, not the main room) with my solo show Richard Tyrone Jones’s Big Heart, which I’m also touring with Apples. I was also privileged enough to take part in the UK’s largest schools slam project ever – Shake the Dust, which rinsed away my fears of working with younger people and being exposed as an old fuddy-duddy who still uses terms like fuddy-duddy. I enjoyed it so much I’m still wearing the t-shirt as I write this. And ooh look, I’m even available to rent for half-price workshops as Apples’ Poet of the Month.

Richard Tyrone Jones’s Big Heart is on as part of Apples’ ‘Forked‘ night at the B-bar, Plymouth on Thursday 25 2012. See http://www.richardtyronejones.com/gigs for tickets and other events.
