Kim Moore – Picture the Poet in Carlisle

Poet Kim Moore tells us about the inspirational work of Dove Cottage Young Poets as part of the National Portrait Gallery’s Picture the Poet exhibition in Carlisle…

When Apples and Snakes got in touch to ask if I’d be interested in running some workshops around the Picture the Poet exhibition, I was really excited, and even more excited about the opportunity to run the workshops with the Dove Cottage Young Poets, a group of young writers that I’ve been working with for the last couple of years.

Jenny Lindsay: Picture the Poet at Tullie House, Carlisle

Writer of spoken word poetry and theatre Jenny Lindsay talks Picture The Poet workshops, character journeys, and performance confidence at Tullie House.

I was thrilled to be part of this project. As a spoken word educator based in Scotland, it was great to be able to cross the border to meet fine young poets – even when crossing the border meant replacement buses and diverted routes!

Speaking of diverted routes: the group I was working with came to these workshops from backgrounds not in spoken word, theatre, poetry …

Picture the Poet in Sunderland: Sky Hawkins

Continuing on from the success of the National Portrait Gallery’s ‘Picture the Poet’ exhibition, we chatted with featured artist, Sky Hawkins, about her time facilitating student workshops at Sunderland College.

I was very excited when I was told I would be working with thirteen second year students from Sunderland College. They had all performed other people’s poetry but never their own. In six weeks, my job was to inspire them to write their own poetry for the first time and be ready to perform it and alongside …

Following the success of the National Portrait Gallery’s ‘Picture the Poet’ exhibition, we caught up with featured artist, Rowan McCabe, to hear about his recent experiences running young people’s workshops at the Sunderland Music Workshop Centre.

A few months ago, I was asked by Apples and Snakes to run some workshops at the Sunderland Music Workshop Centre. It was on the theme of identity, in response to the National Portrait Gallery’s ‘Picture the Poet’ exhibition and I really enjoyed being a part of it.

Dear family and friends,

Squabbling over the advent calendar in the office has begun so it must mean it’s December and, unbelievably, we are on the countdown to the end of the year.

It’s whizzed by again, jam-packed with fabulous events, poets, and projectstoo numerous to mention. Once again we have been lucky enough to work with a wide range of partner organisations, from the Nuffield Council on Bioethics to the National Portrait Gallery to Latitude Festival to Free Word, delivering our diverse programme across the country.

Jess Green – Picture The Poet, Lincolnshire

Jess Green tells us about her experience of running workshops in a Lincolnshire care home, how she saw the young people grow more involved and gain self-confidence.

Over the past six weeks I have been running performance poetry workshops with a group of young girls aged between 14 and 19 in a care home in Lincolnshire. This was organised by Apples and Snakes, part of the Picture the Poet project, a National Portrait Gallery touring exhibition in partnership with the National Literacy Trust and Apples and Snakes.

My aim …

Picture The Poet: Behind The Scenes

Picture The Poet: Behind The Scenes

Writer and teacher, Vicky Morris, gives us an insight into working with South Yorkshire young people on the Picture the Poet project…

Everything great I see in relation to performance poetry almost always involves my favourite fruit and reptile combination – Apples and Snakes, so I was honoured to get the chance to work with them supporting young people on the brilliant Picture the Poet project in autumn 2014.

Not surprisingly, the project was a delight featuring everything a great project of this nature should – an intriguing and …

I have been working in Preston for the past two months, In my time being there, I have met some amazing young people, we have looked at creating self-portraits with words and explored Preston poetically. One of the young people I met is called Toyah Clifton, she had never performed before this project, but she had been writing lyrics for some time. Through Picture The Poet, Toyah ended up sharing a stage with Mike

Picture the Poet with Roundabout, by Sai Murray

Picture the Poet with Roundabout, by Sai Murray

Poet Sai Murray talks to us about Picture the Poet and working with youth organisation Roundabout.

It was a real pleasure to work with the youth organisation Roundabout and to help uncover some of the creative talents that the young people possess. After over-coming the ‘poetry boundary’ – the traditional hurdle of poetry being viewed as something to be studied in books rather than a fluid, live, interactive medium of expression – we enjoyed conversations that ranged from blokes and banter, to loneliness, hostel life and biscuits.

In the process, …
